"I really enjoyed everything we did... I want to learn more. I feel better about where I live, it doesn't seem so dirty. It's changed my life a little because before I wanted to be a sports person and now I want to be an architect." Year 5 pupil, Drew Primary School

Who is involved

Fundamental Architectural Inclusion is an architecture centre based in the London Borough of Newham that seeks new ways for communities, in particular young people, to genuinely participate in the planning and development process of regeneration in their neighbourhoods.

The pilot Programme was funded by the London Borough of Newham's 2012 Unit as part of their programme to 'Establish a Legacy of Opportunities for Newham's Young People'.

As part of the pilot phase we worked with teachers and pupils from nine schools in Newham - Royal Docks Community School; Drew Primary School; Britannia Village Primary School; Stratford Secondary School; Shaftesbury Primary School; Elmhurst Primary School; Brampton Manor Secondary School; New City Primary School and Roman Road Primary School. Each ‘cluster’ of schools included one secondary and two feeder primary schools. Within these schools the project was targeted mainly at pupils in Years 5 and 6 (Primary Key Stage 2) and Years 7, 8 and 9 (Secondary Key Stage 3).

Bridging the Gap was devised and delivered by Fundamental's associate architectural educators, Juliet Sprake and Howard Matthew, led by Nick Edwards of Fundamental, with additional support from Lucy Trotman. Fundamental associate Leila Baker managed the research supported by Emma Neale project researcher.

A Steering Group was established to monitor progress of the pilot Programme. Members included Nick Williams LB Newham 2012 Unit; Andrew Mutter LB Newham Arts Advisor; Louis Moreno DCMS Engaging Places; Pippa Gueterbock EDAW and Rosie Murdoch Olympic Delivery Authority.

The Bridging the Gap identity and website were designed by Linda Byrne www.alphabetical-order.
